Leo Plaw is an artist who seeks to go beyond the edge of the known, glimpsing what lies over the horizon of perception and in a prometheian act, render this in his artwork.

Leo grew up in the Australian rural landscape. Wide open spaces, bushland and swamps provided ample scope for a young fertile imagination seeking out hidden places and things. The decade into which he was born took humanity to the moon. The visionary spirit of exploring new worlds inspired him.

Leo is a self taught artist who has worked with many artistic media. In the late 90’s he was providing visuals for various festivals, musicians and bands, such as Salmonella Dub, The Mad Professor and Lee Scratch Perry.

While living in Sydney, he made contact with a number of international artists and groups which prompted him to travel to Europe in 2003. There he met many artists working with the Fantastic Visionary movement. Here Leo furthered his painting techniques.

Since establishing his studio in Berlin, he has travelled extensively and connected with many people all over the world. He has exhibited internationally, in Austria, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Japan, Portugal, Spain and the U.S.A. His artwork along with various interviews has been presented and published in books, magazines, newspapers and television reports worldwide.

Leo has been very active in a number of community building projects such as the immensely popular beinArt publishing and website project. The Japanese International Fantastic Art Association (IFAA) invited him to exhibit with their group in Kyoto in the Spring of 2008.

He was instrumental in cultural bridge building between the Japanese IFAA and the British AOI artist groups. He went on to establish the Fantastic Visions, an ambitious multi-lingual project which documents Fantastic and Visionary art from around the world.

His artwork is included in a number of collections, including the renowned Van Soest Collection.

Painting Materials

Work is still progressing with my painting, “The Muse“:http://leoplaw.com/artwork/muse/. / Sometimes you have to mess things up to make progress. I wasn’t happy with the folds in the cloth, so I have taken to it with some bold strokes. Sometimes it is rather pleasing to rework the things I have laboured so long over. It can be quite cathartic.
