It is true that I am fascinated by Arnold Böcklin’s “Isle of the Dead”. In particular the third version of the painting he made appeals to me the most.
My intent is to create a series of the painting in varying forms and colours. If the original artist himself could do multiple versions of the same theme, then there is no shame on me to do similarly.
The painting in its various versions has had an enduring fascination for the Böcklin’s own collectors, other artists, the public and including dictators such as Adolf Hitler who had the fourth version “appropriated” and hung in his offices.
Judging by the reactions to these two works currently in progress, I think the fascination continues for many.
